SWEET 16!

The Barbados Jazz Festival celebrates its 16th Annual Edition

First timers will quickly notice generally two classes of attendees: jazz aficionados and jazz enthusiasts.

Jazz aficionados seem to have an inborn or well-trained musical ear. They can genuinely keep up with that drum roll as it crescendos on an off the beat; differentiate between a major and a minor key; and love to boast about their archives of Latin and European jazz, swing, jive, ragtime and Dixieland!

Don’t be intimidated, however, as you will have the company of the jazz enthusiasts, who simply want to demonstrate their taste for the finer things in life and enjoy being mesmerized by the vibe of the atmosphere and the seven-day long cocoon of free-self expression that the regiment of life often stymies.

I pride in being a little bit of both but to be honest I have to thank the organizers because without artistes such as the magical Chrisette Michelle and the black diamond, Angie Stone (pictured here), I'd feel like something was missing.

People argue that these artistes are more R&B than Jazz but I say one gave birth to the other. Also, they don't know the number of jazz radio stations that have been closed down or replaced with rock and pop over the past 12 months!

Thanks to the BJF, and artistes such as those highlighted in this inaugural edition of STREET JAZZ NEWS, the genre is alive and well in all of its permutations in the island of Barbados!

Hope to see you there!

Cheers!

UNPLUGGED FRIDAYS

Every Friday from now until....You can hear Janelle Headley and or Shane Forrester at the Waterfront Cafe doing a mix of Jazz, Blues & Acoustic Soul. I was there last Friday and it was awesome - original after original and you don't need me to tell you they are both super-talented!

This is how it'll happen:
This very first Friday (January 2nd, 2009) they'll share the stage (each having their own set) and from then on they'll be alternating Fridays, coming together again only once a month.

Janelle's Band:
Neil Newton -Bass or Guitar
Kirk Layne- Keys or Bass

Shane's Band:
Shane-Guitar
Julian Griffith- Bass
Melvin-Drums

COMBINED BAND:
Janelle & Shane- Vocals

By the way, Shane Forrester is on the verge of having 60,000 MySpace friends! Add him now if you haven't already and start downloading those tracks. They are breathtaking!
