2009 - the Year of the BHAG

It's okay if you haven't made up your mind what you want to achieve in 2009. Most people take the first month or so to be clear in their minds.

My challenge to you is not to set just any goal but a BHAG - a big, hairy, audacious goal.

When the mission to put a man on the moon was conceived it didn't require a 30-page strategic plan for people to catch the vision!

Similarly, when setting up Google, the aim was not just to have the mother of all search engines but to 'organize the world's information'.

Your BHAG needs to be broad but simple. It should make people's neurons fire; be sufficiently inspiring and daring enough to make them want to bring their best creative talent to the table. It must also fit with your core ideology.

So what if you are the No. 6 seed in your industry or a lowly political also ran or a not so dark dark horse in the race of life. David killed Goaliath with a sling and a stone!

So what BHAG are you planning to set for yourself in 2009?

Remember, our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure!
