I remember when I was much younger I used to dream of becoming a lawyer. Someone must have told me that law was cool because at three-years-old I hardly even knew that it took - three years of an LLB, two years of law school and then the bar.
That's not exactly something you are born knowing unless of course you are Denny Crane. The guy is hilarious and who ever came up with that script, is brilliant.
Then there's Aaron McGruder. Absolute genius (if you have a sense of humour)!
What I want to zero in on however, is that dreamers don't only belong in Hollywood, they also make for great employees, especially marketers.
By dreamers I mean that portion of the population that are natural innovative, creative right brain thinkers. Having at least one on your team can make the difference in the competitiveness of your business.
One of my favourite sites on marketing, MarketingProfs, argued this point in an article that spoke of us being in the era of the 'Creative Economy'.
Remember people talked about the information age in the late nineties and before that the industrial age, the manufacturing and even the ice age? Ours is really the creative age where technology will hopefully reach sustainable levels that will truly leave this world better for the next generation.
Hiring for creativity could be the best way to take your marketing success beyond that of your competition. In the future job titles like chief innovations officer and vp design innovation and strategy will become popular as companies seek to build innovative cultures as an integral part of their existence.
Look for people who have found out-of-the-box ways to get things done. Those who, without precedent, can find a sensible solution to a problem and do it profitably.
Lastly, look for people who are involved in volunteerism or activities beyond their own personal gain. Again, what's the point in being creative if you aren't going to be genuinely philanthropic?
If you are on the other end of the coin and looking for a career in marketing, while this creative business might not be natural for you, it's not hard to learn if you are sincere about helping others.
My previous post began with me following through on a dream I had about running a series on my creative work: Fizzle or Sizzle. That's all it takes really, if you do dream, because I know some people who don't dream in the night season, you just have to have the guts to follow through on it.
I've bought stocks based on a dream I had!
Sounds crazy but I once read that most people who were revered for their 'Einstein' prowess were often viewed as nuts when they were alive.
Ok, don't go too overboard but yea get crazy with your creative and see where it takes you!
